Student Empowerment Program

Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities

The Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ Student Empowerment Program has had a significant positive impact on participating students. The program helps students develop essential daily living skills while fostering healthy relationships among peers and school staff. Through engaging, interactive activities, students gain practical knowledge in a fun and supportive environment, promoting personal growth and social integration.

In October, Carroll Hills School hosted an educational session on germ prevention led by Katrina Nitz, Ohio State University 4-H Youth Development Educator. Using Glo Germ LED UV light, Katrina demonstrated proper handwashing techniques, allowing students to practice and visualize effective hygiene habits. The hands-on activity generated excitement and reinforced the importance of personal health.

Additional sessions emphasized the program’s guiding principle: “Improve the lives of students through a safe and supportive environment by being an active, productive member of their families, schools, and communities.” Middle and high school groups explored safe practices for cold and flu season, focusing on personal space, hygiene, and handwashing. These lessons highlighted how individual actions contribute to the well-being of the entire community.
