Success Through Determination

Kristen Long was a teen when she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.  This disability turns soft tissue into bone, making it extremely difficult for her to complete daily tasks without assistance.  In 2008, Kristen started working at Carroll Hills Industries doing piece work, but it was quickly evident that she was capable of more.  Kristen moved to the front office where she worked independently answering phones, greeting visitors, providing data entry for Medicaid billing, etc.  Kristen expressed interest and attended Self-Advocacy training, which led her to become the first in Carroll County.  Kristen led Self-Advocacy Group meetings at Carroll Hills providing insight to others on how to become their own self-advocate.  Countless individuals followed her example and have become their own self- advocate since then. 

By 2018, Kristen was ready for a change.  The Carroll County General Health District needed an Administrative Assistant in the Nursing Division, and Kristen was given the opportunity to prove herself.  

She enthusiastically learned to schedule appointments, bill insurance for services provided, support grant materials and data collection, and much more.  Kristen wanted more so she pursued a college degree.  Kristen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting which helped her understand more related to billing and provided knowledge in excel for data collection and tracking.  Once again though, she wanted more.  Kristen will graduate in July,2023 with a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a Concentration in Community Health Leadership.  In obtaining her degree, Kristen has received a promotion at the Carroll County General Health District becoming the Public Health Emergency Coordinator and Epidemiologist. 

Living independently is important to Kristen and with the help of direct care staff, she is able is able to do just that.  Kristen serves on the Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities Board as Secretary and is also a board member for the Ohio Association of County Boards.  Kristen does not let her physical disability stop her from reaching her goals.  Congratulations Kristen, you are an inspiration to all!
